    GAS prices

I am curious to know why we don't get a break down of state and federal tax on each gallon we purchase.  What is the actual price per gallon and what TAX do we pay on each gallon.  We get that with every phone bill, utility bill, even our grocery bill tells us what we pay in tax.  Does anyone know why we don't get this information?

    Re: GAS prices

I remember reading or hearing that it is a buried tax and the state does not want it posted.  It is a % tax also, so the higher the price of gas the more tax they collect.  That is why the politicians blame everything on "big oil", they love to divert attention away from their part in the problem. From a revenue stance the state could not be happier.  More dollars to throw around to pork projects.

    Re: GAS prices

Here is the deal:   The Federal and State tax are buried and there is a bill that requires that.  The reason: if you knew that $0.60 of the $3.25 your paying is Federal and State taxes you might get mad and do something about it.

On Gasoline:      $0.184 per gallon Federal Excise Tax
$0.166 per gallon State Petroleum Business Tax
$0.16  per gallon sales tax (both prepaid by station and your sales tax)
$0.085 per gallon State Excise Tax
                             $0.595 per gallon tax

OR 18.3% of the total price.  Do you think they want to do anything about this?

You can google "State gas tax", New York took over Hawaii and the highest in the nation.

Remember this when our politicians are spouting off about how "big oil is ripping us off",

But what can we do really? I am not wealthy but I am scratching by day by day. We're all in the same boat here, we need gas to fill our vehicles to get to work, go out to buy food, etc. We have no choice there, we're not rich enough to just go out and buy a new car with alternative fuel, besides there are no places to buy alternative fuel where I live. I have no idea what any of us can do about the gas prices, ANYONE??

    Re: GAS prices

We all have apathy and that is the problem.  Now you know the truth, what are you prompted to do?  My guess is what everyone else does, NOTHING.  You now know the truth about how we as NY citizens are overtaxed and OUR government is very sly about hiding it from you.  How about take the information you now know and call, email, write your congressman and State Representative and ask why are we taxed out the backside on fuel tax and the tolls are going to go up?  The State government collects diesel and gas tax for road maintenance along with federal highway dollars and tolls (which by the way were supposed to be temporary).  Demand from your politicians that the tax be suspended until prices come down.  Don’t think I am attacking you, I am not.  Your politicians listen to what ever the voter wind is blowing in.  A good example is Spitzer’s plan to give illegal aliens valid drivers licenses, as soon as it became clear the his approval rating tanked and 70% of New Yorkers were against it, he dropped it like a hot potato.  The same would happen to the excessive hidden gas tax if people would stop whining at Christmas parties and take action.

    Re: GAS prices

This would be a good time to voice your opinion.  Spitzer's approval ratings are in the toilet and the latest poll numbers indicate that New Yorkers want taxes cut, if I know it so does he.  LETS START WITH THE GAS!!!!!

Do something about it or forever hold your peace!

    Re: GAS prices

So I wrote to Spitzer about the gas prices and after I sent it I get a page that said:
"Thank you for sending your thoughts and concerns to Governor Spitzer. Your email has been received and will be forwarded to the appropriate staff for review."

You think he'll really get to read it or is some moron going to dump it with the rest? Maybe a petition would be better, I wonder if an internet petition is possible or does it have to be hand signed?

    Re: GAS prices

Good Job, believe it or not his staff does and will read it.  I called his office directly and spoke to one of his staff and voiced my frustration.  You and I can do very little, but if everyone would get involved these guys would hear the screams.  Don't give up, these clowns work for you, even though it doesn't seem like it.  Anything the public can do to tell these guys that we demand action will help.

I will email Spitzer today also and in my email I am going to say "this would be a very popular move for the NY voters".  I wont' give up either!!!!
