Pardon me, but your ignorance is showing again. Branta Canadensis is covered under the umbrella of the Endangered Species Act of  1973 which covers all birds included in the Migratory Bird Treaty Act.

    Re: don't kill the geese

You've got me wrong - I'm not violent and don't think animals are useless.  That's your misinformed opinion. I love my dog, and brake if reasonable to avoid birds, squirrels etc. on the road.  I'm not advocating killing these pests just for the sport or fun of it.  If you want to spend your time chasing geese go ahead but ultimately you'll realize you're just banging your head against a wall, it doesn't work - they're going to come back.  If they were endangered then I would be in favor of relocating them far away from where people congregate - but they're not.  I just think nuisance animals and pests are just dealt with most economically and effectively by extermination.  Your quoting PETA - a wacko hypocritical bunch of nutbags doesn't help your credibility.  Go visit www.petakillsanimals.com for a balanced viewpoint.  Those people are against drinking milk, fishing, wearing leather shoes, dissection classes in school, and have a conniption if you enjoy a lobster dinner.  Perhaps your time would be better spent by trying to close down Ellis Hospital - they just exterminated a bunch of pigeons.  Maybe you should file that away for future use in case an ambulance ever wants to take you there for emergency treatment, you wouldn't want to place your life in the hands of such inconsiderate ans incompassionate animal killers.

    Re: don't kill the geese

Of course you are a violent person. Your attitude displayed here and attempts to continue to argue make that apparent. The names you have called eveyone else here describe yourself. As long as you are satiated that is all that counts. Doesn’t matter what got disemboweled and boiled alive as long as you have fashion on your feet and your taste buds are titillated. This is called selfishness. There are non-violent solutions to establishing a cooperative co-existence with the rest of the inhabitants of this planet.  The plan to slaughter the Collins Lake geese is not about human survival or need for food to prevent human starvation, it is about aesthetics and hedonism. A mud hole for swimming is not necessary for human survival and there are simple solutions to picking up poop. Lawn sweepers that can be purchased for about the same cost as trapping and killing them. The lawn sweepers are attached to the mowers and done as part of routine lawn care with no extra time involved. The people posting here are concerned with saving the geese, so knowing that, what is your point in continuing to post here? Why would any one want to close down Ellis Hospital? I would hope that they would consider non-lethal methods next time. Not only are your statements unfounded, but illogical also. We will continue to work on saving the geese.  If you have a problem with that, that is your ***. Please feel free to continue to wallow in it.

    Re: don't kill the geese

Anyone who would read all the posts would see I have thoughtfully considered both sides of the issue and formed an opinion based upon measured and reasonable evaluation of the issue.  Why don't you go to China and protest where they want to exterminate all dogs within a 3 mile area of where rabies were found?  In China protesters are jailed or shot, here we have forums where you can spout your vitriol without risk, and you have the nerve to call me violent?  At least I would have tranquilized the rabid dogs before euthanizing them.   I feel sorry for you, all caught up in your hate of majority opinion, what a terrible life you have and will continue to wallow in.   Maybe you should send some money over there so they can vaccinate their dogs instead of killing them?  Or boycott Chinese made goods, that will surely help.  Maybe boycott Walmart, where they sell a lot of Chinese imports.  Myself I think I'll go get some chinese food, and sit in front of my air conditioner on my recliner both of which were probably made in China and watch some TV on my set which is probably made in China, and watch the madia blame the chinese for using up so much oil that people can't afford to drive their SUV's which are contributing to global warming. Actually that could be your answer - if you contribute to global warming the geese will go further north and not bother us any more!  Maybe the global warming will make it too hot in the capital district and you'll go away and nother bother us any more either.  I'm hoping to have ocean front property here myself.

BEIJING - A second Chinese city plans a mass dog slaughter to control a rabies outbreak, state media said Friday, days after a similar cull in which dogs were beaten to death prompted a torrent of criticism.

Officials in the eastern city of Jining said Thursday they would kill all dogs within three miles of areas where rabies had been found, the official Xinhua News Agency said.

The measure came in response to the deaths of 16 people from rabies in Jining in the last eight months, Xinhua said. It didn’t say when the cull would begin or how the animals would be killed. It said the city had about 500,000 dogs.

Rabies cases are on the rise in China, with more than 2,000 people dying from the disease each year. Only 3 percent of the country’s dogs are vaccinated against rabies.

    Re: don't kill the geese

There are a lot of wrongs in the world, including the shameful slaughtering of dogs in China.  Abuse of animals in other countries doesn't justify the killing of geese in America, there's no connection there so your comparison makes no sense.   People who care about animals and wildlife have other concerns too.  We care about war and people dying and suffering and most are probably active in supporting other causes as well.  Some, however, choose to make a difference in their community when they see wrongs occuring and that's what the people in this area have done in regards to the geese and other unethical treatment of animals.  Perhaps you consider PETA to be nutty, you have the right to believe what you want, however, the videos and photos don't lie.  I'm so glad that their organization has made such major strides with the laws and legislation and has educated millions of people of what goes on behind the scenes.  Educating people can only improve society as a whole and allow people to make educated choices as to what food they eat, what politicitian they support, what products to buy, and what action to take to support those things that don't have a voice.  We all have choices in life and we have the right to fight for what we believe in regardless of whether you or anyone else agrees with it or not.  P.S.  I live near Ellis hospital and a poison bird landed near my yard where I was walking my dog.  The bird fell from the sky like a box of rocks and splattered on the pavement.  My dog came into contact with it but thankfully, I got away from it quickly.  If my dog took a taste of this dead poisoned bird and ingested poison and died, I suppose that would be okay with you because you support the killing of birds.  The carcasses are filled with poison and the birds were found 5-7 blocks from Ellis hospital, all over the community.   Other animals and wildlife will come into contact with these poisoned carcasses and likely they will become sick or die themselves.  Think about that, apparnetly the bird killers didn't!!

    Re: don't kill the geese

    Dotty,

Thanks for your perspective and philosophy.  Some people just don't care about protecting wildlife or the environment.  They live in the now and could care less about future generations.  Fortunately, there are just as many people who do care and are doing something about it so I encourage you to continue voicing your opinion and bringing up issues of concern.  All we can do is spread the word, educate people who are willing to have an open mind and take action, even if its on a small scale such as this.  We have prevailed and saved the geese and it wouldn't have been a success without the dedicated and committed people who banded together for such a good cause.

    Re: don't kill the geese

    Dotty and Kendra,

Thank you both for your posts. To believe one has the right to deem any other species "a nuisance" is an extreme form of self-righteous selfishness. I dont know where this belief comes from that one should not have to step in poop. We share this planet with thousands of other species. It does not belong to exclusively to humankind and we need to exist cooperatively with the rest of the worlds inhabitants.Might doesn't make right.  It would never occur to someone like Calaviesno to go clean the poop up or to change himself to adapt to the environment. People that believe anything that happens to bother them should be disposed of don't draw the line with animals.

Well the hunter kills deer in the fall and who knows what they have. One man killed a deer a few years ago,it had rabbies, well he had a cut on his hand ,the blood from the deer went into the cut ,and the last time i heard he died from rabbies.Yes the killing of dogs in china is sick, but remeber they also breed dogs and cats to eat.And if a baby is born a girl, its worthless ,dumped some where for others to care for,a boy child means a good working farm hand.

    Re: don't kill the geese

    Calaviesno:

We will never come to an agreement about this. For every study that says geese *** is hazardous there is another that says it is overblown.

Canada geese *** can be hazardous to people's health. The elderly, children, and pregnant or breastfeeding women are particularly susceptible to health risks posed by parasites that inhabit Canada geese ***. At even higher risk are those with weak immune systems, such as people with HIV/AIDS, chemotherapy recipients, and recent organ donors and recipients. Similarly, people with gastrointestinal (GI) problems, such as ulcers and irritable bowel disease, are also at increased risk, since they, too, cannot easily combat parasites from Canada geese ***.

Geese *** usually contain the parasites cryptosporidium, giardia, coliform, and campylobacter. Cryptosporidium poses the most serious health hazard, since it causes cryptosporidiosis, an illness with the following symptoms:

    • watery diarrhea
    • dehydration
    • weight loss
    • stomach cramps or pain
    • fever
    • nausea
    • vomiting

Cryptosporidium was responsible for a 1993 outbreak of disease in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, when the city's water supply became contaminated. One hundred people died and 400,000 became ill during this epidemic. The risk for a city or town's water supply becoming infected with cryptosporidium lingers as some municipalities do not check their water for this parasite at all. Wisely, New York City has been testing its water supply regularly for this parasite since 1992 as part of its water safety monitoring program.

Different governments and municipalities have tackled this issue in different ways, some have exterminated the geese, others have advocated and utilized different methods. The problem is not going to go away, the geese will come back and continue to ruin the area.  If you want to spend your time and your money feel free, but for my time and money extermination is the answer.  Why is it ok to exterminate caterpillars? All they do is eat the leaves off of trees?  Is a goose "cuter" than a little fuzzy caterpillar?  What about trapping squirrels that damage property, or shooting predatory animals?  Where do you draw the line?   You're the one who is closed minded, not me.  If you have a less costly and more effective alternative, then let's hear it.  Don't feel sorry for me, I'm quite comfortable with my position.  I never said they "deserve to die" that what you inferred in your closed minded way.

yeah i forget you let your pregnant breast feeding wife your children and your elder play in fecal ponds where they can get and eat CANADIAN geese fecal matter, ..wtf? hahaha... you should go out and trap them and let your starving pregger wife and children and your cystic dog eat some geese, thats what you suggested after all, .. oh! and i forget you spend soo much on saving your dog cause it justifies the deaths of other creatures that you dont give a *** about, ..who cares about your damn dog, why dont we eat it! cause its a walking fibrosis cyst that shits in your yard and possibly the neighbors!where thier kids can play with dog fecal, ..you know your prolly eating *** when you go dine out, ..that cook that prepped your meal, well his finger poked through the toilet paper when he wiped and just zipped and flushed and went back to cooking your meal

these days you can get sick just touching a doorknob, ..dont use that oh theres diseases thing, ..your prolly a gifter anyway..

and to those who do care about the geese get ahold of peta or tulsa peta represenatives or any animal rights association, tho, i am sceptical of the tulsa A.S.P.C.A considering they had a giant half a million dollar estate donated to them and somehow are still broke and say they have no money at all, ..theres some crooked accountants in that company, anywho, ..contact who u must ,everything can be resolved, if cava's dog can be cystic free than by god the geese dont have to die, ..as a matter a fact *** it just go out buy your own cages go down grab the geese yourself and take them before they kill e'm thats what i would do, ..Hmmm....*looks at time* geese are most active around 7-10 am, ..wonder what i will be doing this afternoon...

    :)

*i agree this is the way of the NATIVE AMERICAN, in which i am too proud to be, i have a passion and love for animals and nature and giving back to mother earth what we put into it, ..its our way of life and thinking, instead of getting rid of the geese lets get rid of the white men that moved in on our land after all, they wouldnt know our way of life cause they just MOVED on in to our land, ..we keep getting rid of them, and they keep comming back, ..*sigh* just like the geese i guess..

    Re: don't kill the geese

    Greetings;

I am new to this forum and couldn't help read all of the geese debate.  The only problems we have with geese here in Florida is that they love to nest on the airport runways.  They just relocate them when they do.

Our big problem is the alligators. It is mating season and the males are all out "looking for love in all the wrong places"- people's garages, parking lots at the malls, swimming pools, ponds-they are just about found everywhere during this time of the year. Our animal control is hopping busy.  We just had one at our apartment complex's pond.  We had several pairs of geese and quite a few ducks that were permanent residents-now it is down to one pair of geese and 2 pair of ducks-the alligator got the rest before animal control got it. The alligator also went after a couple of kids. they do that alot down here.  They will eat your cats, dogs (and even kids).

My husband and I are leaving out on May 28th-moving to Albany permanently.  New York is my home state.  We both have been offered jobs at Albany Medical Center and are looking forward to our move up there. It won't be long before we are up there and apartment searching near the hospital as we both want to walk to work, the park, etc.

                                                             Carol
