Elimination Communication (EC) stopped my daughters "unexplained" tantrums!
I had read about EC while I was pregnant. The very fact that it is practiced in so
many countries and cultures around the world really caught my attention. When I
asked my Mom about my potty training she said I had been potty trained by 18 months
old. Then I read the statistics about how many American kids are ending up in
diapers till almost four years of age. I thought to myself, "What, am I supposed to
believe that American kids are just stupid or something? That they are unlike any
other children in the world and that they have disfunctional bowels?"
So, when my daughter turned 7 months old, I had really started to notice that she
was grunting vigorously when she needed to poop. In fact she was throwing tantrums
right in the middle of breakfast and lunch just before she finally started to grunt.
I thought to myself, why should she have to go in her diaper. So, I took her to
the bathroom, held her over the potty and voila! I thought to myself, "Wow! That was
so much easier than cleaning smeared and squished *** off of my daugher's rear and
running the risk of a 'blowout' and extra laundry."
So, we officially started ECing the next morning! When she first woke up, I took her
to the bathroom, held her over the toilet, made the "Psss" sound and then she urinated.
I couldn't believe it. SO I decided to give it a try at breakfast to prevent her
tantrums. The moment she started to refuse food and make that, "I'm about to throw
and tantrum face", we went to the bathroom. And what do you think happened? She peed
and pooped in the toilet! No tantrum! She went back to eating her breakfast without
a single moment of unhappiness.
So, to the extremely uninformed doctor who called "EC" agressive, I say, "Please do
your research before you continue to embarras yourself. Clearly, my daughter does
not want to soil herself. Soiling herself greatly upsets her. She has made it very
clear that she "knows" when she is about to soil herself. Now that I respond to her,
she no longer throws tantrums during her meals. In fact, she had started to use ASL
hand signs to tell us that she needs to use the toilet. SHe is only 8 1/2 months
old."
